Connecting to Shared Directories on MHMF computers

Introduction

• This section describes connecting to shared directories on MHmicroscopy computers for Windows users on the UNC Chapel Hill campus.  It is assumed that connections will be made from a PC running WindowsNT/2000/XP/2003/2008 with Ethernet connectivity (OIS/ATN computer wall plug or wireless) and with Windows TCP/IP networking properly setup.  (Windows95/98/ME are not supported in order to comply with HIPAA requirements)
• Please note that some MHMF workstations have fire walls, so users outside of the School of Medicine will have to explicitly request access to these computers to be enabled.  (Please try the steps below and ask Michael if you have problems connecting).
• Mac System X computers can access shared directories.  Access is granted using your MHMF log in account.  Remember passwords must be 8 or less characters long.  Older Mac systems can use Apple Talk connections to UNC-SOM -> Medicine -> MINSKY (Note Apple talk will not be supported once the new MHmicroscopy server is running, probably in late 2009)

What Can Be Accessed

• Ask a facility director  (a print out is available on request)

Connecting

Open a "My Computer" window      or

or   hold down the windows-key and press the letter E  

If you do not have an address bar visible enable it by clicking on View ---> ToolBars ---> Address Bar

Type \\COMPUTER_NAME into the address bar  (via VPN the computer ip number is required e.g. \\152.19.58.191 or the dns name e.g. \\fresnel.med.unc.edu)
e.g. \\CF-server  (CF Center server)   \\152.2.89.13  (GT Center server)  \\cmphys-server (Cell & Molec. Physiology)

Hit Enter and you will be prompted for a username and password.  Important: add mhmicrosopy\ before your user name.  e.g.  mhmicroscopy\jsmith

Note: For the GT Center server replace mhmicroscopy with research
Note: For the CF Center server replace mhmicroscopy with cf-server
Note: For the BAC Center server replace mhmicroscopy with cas-server
Note: For the Cell. & Molc. Physiology replace mhmicroscopy with cmphys-server

Shared Directories and its contents should now be browsable

Optionally a shared directory can be mapped to a drive letter

• By browsing
• Using the command prompt
