Atomic Force Microscope - ThermoMicroscopes Topometrix Explorer

Location: 6033a Thurston Bowles

0.  Notices

The AFM is currently unavailable.  It has been packed away in order to create space for a series of microscope demonstrations.

Minimal support is currently available to afm users.  Only advise and instruction of the basic operation of the system are provided.

afm.med.unc.edu, the AFM computers, is on the network, but is frequently turned off.

1.  Introduction

AFM scanning is done is one of two basic modes.  1. Contact mode, or 2. Tapping mode.  Most measurements of surface roughness texture are best done in tapping mode.  In this mode the tip is oscillated just above the same and interactions of the van der waals forces between the tip and the surface are detected, and this signal is used in a feedback loop to keep the tip at a constant height above the material surface.
