UNC Phase 2 Covid-19 mitigation requirements as of May 22, 2020 -
Applicable to at least June 26
Colleagues,
As you have seen, the Governor announced the
entry into Phase 2 of re-opening, Safer at Home, and the University has
described ways to re-start research and an approach to the planning for the
fall. Medical students will be beginning clinical rotations, and it is
anticipated that more and more people will consider returning to work.
Within the SOM we will be complying with the state and University
recommendations to minimize the spread of disease.
We write to clarify a few things about space
utilization in SOM buildings.
-
In line with Safer at Home, all work that can
be accomplished remotely should continue to be done remotely.
-
Self-monitor for symptoms and do
not come to work if you are sick. Please see Occupational Health
guidelines for more details including how to report illness.
-
It is so important that each of us Wear
Wash and Wait to protect the community as best as
possible. Wear a mask. Wait 6 feet apart. Wash your hands
often.
-
In line with prior requirements, wearing
of surgical masks is required in all SOM buildings unless
alone in a room with the door closed.
-
We continue to recommend
virtual rather than in person meetings.
-
For those who must be present in SOM
buildings, we will follow the Governor’s recommendations to maintain group
meetings of 10 people maximum.
-
In line with University recommendations, we
will allow facilities to reach 50% capacity by using staggered work
schedules, physical distancing, and encouraging work from home. Each
group must consider ways to have only 50% of individuals present at any
given time.
-
SOM buildings will remain card access
controlled during phase 2 of the state’s reopening.
-
Existing room reservations in SOM buildings
for groups of more than 10 people will be canceled through June 26, which is
the first date that the Governor’s Phase 2 plan can end.
-
Rooms can be reserved for less than 10
people.
-
Rooms in Bondurant and MacNider will be open
for individuals to use for physical distancing as needed. There is a 10
person limit on number of people in each room, unless marked smaller as some
small rooms cannot hold 10 people with adequate physical distancing.
-
We advise building
occupants to bring food from home and to eat outside weather permitting or
otherwise in locations that are food safe (not in a lab) and provide enough
distance from others.
-
Please follow signage,
traffic flow markings, floor spacing markings and taped off seating to
facilitate distancing.
-
Groups and meetings can and should occur
outside if appropriate. A mask should still be worn in those settings, but
improved air circulation outside allows for even safer interactions.
-
Each individual is encouraged to be mindful
of good hand hygiene as well as surface cleaning of workspaces.
As the University mailing clarified, decisions
about who returns to campus, and when, will be managed centrally, and
supervisors will be contacting employees about work arrangements in the coming
weeks. We will work with employees to balance individual needs with those of the
school, unit or department. Faculty and staff will be asked to abide by the
community standards for health and safety. Employees should initially
expect staggered work schedules, alternating schedules, reconfigured
workstations, remote work and other accommodations to limit density on campus
and maximize safety.
Our facilities team is doing a great job of
considering how to keep us safe in our buildings and success depends on each of
us. Our overarching goal is to protect the health and well-being of all as we
advance the school’s missions to the extent possible. We will not be capable
of envisioning every scenario. Instead, we will rely on each
other within the SOM community as individuals and as leaders to keep the above
goal in mind when applying the Phase 2 guidance below to their unique
circumstances.
Sincerely,
